Happened to me a few years ago, with former actor, model, semi-pro hockey player, and later Green Beret Michael Mantenuto. I was nostalgically rewatching the Disney sports movie MIRACLE, and had the notion to look him up, only to find out he’d passed like a week earlier.
Worst of it is, he died young in a brutal and suspicious ‘suicide’, leaving behind a wife and kids. Tarnished the fond memories, tbh. He was really physically beautiful, too.

Apparently the actor/hockey player Joseph Cure, who played college Olympian Mike Ramsey in the movie, died in a car accident in 2015. At the time of his death he was pre-med, getting ready to leave sports and become a doctor. Coincidentally, during the shooting of the film around a decade prior, Herb Brooks (the man on whom the film was based) also died in a car accident. Weird.

Mike should have stayed in acting, where functional addiction and attention-seeking behaviours are actually boons rather than pathologies. Interesting but not suprpsing that the Army seem not to understand that the horrors they put their boys through probably instigate most of all the substance abuse and self-harm they see.

Actually, when people die, they do pass gas (among other things). So, it's technically correct to say that someone who died passed. What exactly they passed is the politely unmentioned subtext.
I, personally, use the phrase 'farted their way down to hell'. But that's a sophisticated poet's manner-of-speech.

Here's the detailed info, from WIKI, on Adrienne's death:
"Shelly was found dead at approximately 5:45 p.m on November 1, 2006. Her husband, Andy Ostroy, discovered her body in the Abingdon Square apartment in Manhattan's West Village that she used as an office. Ostroy had dropped her off at 9:30 a.m. He had become concerned because Shelly had not been in contact that day and went to the building, asking the doorman to accompany him to the apartment. They found her body hanging from a shower rod in the bathtub with a bed sheet around her neck.
Despite the door not having been locked and money reportedly missing from her wallet, New York City Police Department apparently believed Shelly had taken her own life. An autopsy found she had died as a result of neck compression. Ostroy insisted that his wife was happy in her personal and professional life, and in any case would never have committed suicide leaving her two and a half year old daughter motherless. His protests over the following days caused a more careful re-examination of the bathroom, which revealed there was a sneaker print in gypsum dust on the toilet beside where her body had been found. The suspect print was matched to a set of other shoe prints in the building, where construction work had been done the day of Shelly's death.

"On November 6, 2006, the press reported the arrest of Diego Pillco, a 19-year-old construction worker from Ecuador, who according to police had confessed on tape to attacking Shelly, and then staging the fake suicide by hanging her.
Pillco's original version of what happened was that when Shelly asked if the noise could be kept down, he threw a hammer and shoved her out of the room where he said she slapped him in retaliation. Afraid she would make a complaint that might result in his deportation, he followed her back to her apartment, when the petite 40-year-old reportedly enraged Pillco by calling him a "son of a bitch", where Pillco said that he then punched her in the face, knocking her to the ground where she hit her head and fell unconscious.
Believing that he had killed Shelly, he said he then hung Shelly to make it appear as a suicide. This original version of events by Pillco were not supported due to the lack of severe head trauma and neck compression being ruled the cause of Shelly's death.
Subsequently, Pillco gave a completely different account during trial in 2008, which he said while returning to work after a lunch break, he noticed Shelly returning to her apartment in an elevator and decided to follow and rob her. Pillco then said he waited on the upstairs landing of Shelly's apartment floor as she entered her apartment and left the door open which he then intruded to steal from her purse.
Pillco then said that after Shelly caught him and threaten to call police, he grabbed the phone and covered her mouth to quiet Shelly's screaming when she saw him reaching after her. After rendering Shelly unconscious during the ensuing struggle, Pillco then proceeded to bind a nearby bed sheet around Shelly's neck and begin strangling her. He then dragged her body to the apartment bathroom where he hung her body from the shower rod to make her death look like a suicide.
The second version was consistent with the lack of dust on Shelly's shoes (which she was not wearing when found) and seemed to be a confession to murder, but prosecutors reportedly thought if charged with murder Pillco might return to his original account and a jury trial could find him guilty of a lesser charge. Police disclosed that Pillco had obtained noticeable scratch marks on his face that he received from Shelly during the struggle. Conclusively, The medical examiner determined that Shelly was still alive when hanged. Pillco pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to 25 years in prison without parole.
At Pillco's sentencing on March 13, 2008, Shelly's husband, along with family members, said that they would never forgive him. Andy Ostroy said of Pillco "...you are nothing more than a cold-blooded killer" and that he hoped he would "rot in jail."
In remembering Shelly, Ostroy said that "Adrienne was the kindest, warmest, most loving, generous person I knew. She was incredibly smart, funny and talented, a bright light with an infectious laugh and huge smile that radiated inner and outer beauty... she was my best friend, and the person with whom I was supposed to grow old."
by Anonymous | reply 58 | April 5, 2021 2:17 PM |
The employer of the company Pilco worked for should certainly bear some responsibility for Adrienne's death, the killer lived in one of the buildings owned by his employer. All the workers employed on this particular assignment were undocumented immigrants, the employer knew these men were in NYC illegally.
"According to an acquaintance, Pillco said after eight months he still owed a debt on the $12,000 he had paid to be smuggled into the US, and he lived in the basement of a building owned by his employer.
One of Shelly's neighbors told reporters that Pillco's stare had made the neighbor feel uncomfortable when she walked past him.Shelly's husband sued contractor Bradford General Contractors, which had hired Pillco. The complaint alleged that Shelly would still be alive if the contracting firm had not hired him.
Ostroy also sought to hold the owners and management of the building liable for Shelly's murder. According to a New York Post article, among other allegations, the complaint stated that "'Pillco was an undocumented immigrant...' as were his co-workers, and that "it was in Bradford General Contractors' interest not to have 'police and immigration officials [called] to the job site' because that would have ground their work to a halt."
On July 7, 2011, the lawsuit was dismissed by Judge Louis York. The court determined that Ostroy had not established legal grounds to hold the contractor liable, writing "While this court sympathizes with [Ostroy's] loss, plaintiffs have not presented sufficient legal grounds upon which to hold Bradford ... liable for Pillco's vicious crime," and that there was likewise insufficient evidence presented to find that either the building's management agents or its owners "had reason to believe that Pillco was a dangerous person who should not have been allowed to work at the premises" in order to find them vicariously liable. Ostroy was said to be considering an appeal."

Not true at all, R15. The phrases "passed away" and "passed" date to the 1300s.
[quote]early 14c., "done with, over, existing no more," a variant of passed, past participle of passen "go by" (see pass (v.)). Meaning "gone by, belonging to a time previous to this" is from mid-14c.
and
[quote]Pass away, meaning depart, has been used in the sense 'die' (60.) since about 1375; Lay Folks Mass Book (MS. B) 112: “God lord graunt .. rest and pese Þat lastis ay to christen soules passed away.”
Also see the OED.
There's a group of OCD Dataloungers who scream every time someone uses the phrase, I suspect they're also the micromanagers who go into a rage any time someone posts about a death that does NOT use "dead to me" in the subject line.

I wondered what happened to Lanna Saunders, who played the role of Sister Marie Horton on Days of Our Lives, from 1979-85. Turns out she was diagnosed with MS in 1982, and had to leave the role in 1985, due to her declining health. She died in 2007.

This past weekend I watched a dumb S&M movie on Tubi starring the girl from Buffy called BOUND.
The main guy, the "master" was really hot so I looked him up on IMDB.
Bryce Draper. Died at age 39 of a heart attack last year celebrating his 39th birthday in Mexico. What a waste. His body was off the chain.

The school marm in Blazing Saddles died in 2020. The actress who played her, Carol Arthur, was also the wife of actor Dom DeLuise, who I thought was gay, gay, gay. So actually, two surprises here.

Twice! With a decade and a half between them where I forgot and was surprised all over again. Sunny Johnson played the ice skating best friend Jeanie in Flashdance. The shocking thing is she died about a year after the movie and I never heard about it until around the early 2000s. I always thought Cynthia Rhodes would be the break out star from the movie, but she peaked with Dirty Dancing. This actress seemed lovely like she might have had a future too.

I was looking through old anime shows I watched as a kid a few months ago. While watching Gundam Wing, I decided to look up the voice actor who voiced Trowa Barton (Kirby Morrow) and was shocked to learn that he died in 2020.
That man's CV for voice acting was massive. Hit me right in the childhood. :(

Bill Bailey, adult straight porn star who was in lots of gangbang scenes, though skittish around other men’s junk, was drinking extensively throughout the day and fell off a balcony in Mexico and died. He had a big beautiful cock, but he couldn’t live forever. The surprise porn star deaths are always lurid and shocking when you find them out.

I was looking up the actors from the original Boys in The Band movie, which I saw for the first time this summer, and found out that many of them died of AIDS. Yes, too many of them.

I didn’t have a computer during my undergrad &grad school years, & was in the computer lab looking up my fave pornstar, Tom Farrell in 1998 or so.
Imagine my shock when I found out he’d died in ‘93, from being struck by a car (hit & run) as he peed roadside.
I was so floored & saddened that up I logged out & was a bit shaky.

April: "Mama Cass is dead?!!!!!"

That Dirty Dancing one is shocking! And at 32 it must have been fairly soon after the movie and he just looked like your basic clean cut Jewish guy.
One I remember looking up a few years ago only to find out she had died was Debra Winger’s friend (and Lydia Hearst lookalike) from An Officer and a Gentleman. I think she had a brain tumor but not certain.

I was watching The Caine Mutiny the other day and was wondering about Robert Francis, who played young Ensign Keith. I was curious as to what other movies he was in and what he did with his life. Turns out he died in a plane crash (he was piloting) in 1955, the year after Caine Mutiny came out in theaters. I think he was only 25.

Cecily Adams, the young up-and -coming actress known for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. I followed her career from the early 80s until she died in 2004.
From 1978-1981, college years for her and myself, we both worked at the same restaurant, she as a waitress and I as a busboy. She was majoring in drama at UC Irvine. Another busboy, Greg, who was training me on my first night, took me aside and said: "See her over there? That's Ceciliy Adams. She's Don Adams' daughter. But one thing, don't EVER say anything to her about it. She hates it when people bring up her dad."
So I went with that, although it made me skeptical, with only what he'd told me as the truth. Six months go by, another night. A fellow waitress asks Cecily 'So how's your dad doing?" and in the coldest tone possible, she shot back"How's yours?" and walked away briskly. All I thought was 'Note to self: remember to thank Greg profusely for helping me dodge a bullet."
She was 46 when she died from fourth stage lung cancer, despite being a life-long non-smoker. Her husband wrote a book about her final years.

I went through a magnum pi period a year or two ago. It was airing 6 nights a week on charge TV. Every episode I would check the episode wiki and go down the rabbit hole on the cast. Obviously deaths of the older actors wasn't shocking. But 2 child actors who were in episodes as leads died very young. Also the actresses who played magnum's wife and girlfriend in the last season died relatively young.

Always been intrigued by the Karyn Kupcinet case. Obviously a very unhappy young lady. Several theories out there: her father said at one time they know she was murdered and who did it but didn’t have enough proof; was also said Irv blamed her boyfriend Andrew Prine and had him black balled in the industry; then I read Irv never believed AP had anything to do with it; it was said it could have been an accident and she fell against a coffee table breaking her own hyoid bone instead of being strangled and the coroner was inept; also that it could have been one of the guys who hung out with her group, Hope Lange’s brother who was a bit psycho. I subscribe to the latter, but just try finding out any info about him. Nothing out there.

Lois Areno Hamilton. Model / actress. Tiny parts in movies but zillions of jiggle tv episodic television in the 70s and 80s. I recently saw her on an episode of Three’s Company and I was wondering what she was up to. It turned out she checked into the Rio de Janeiro Sheraton, took an overdose of pills AND tied a plastic bag around her head. She meant business and it worked.

Looking up old time actresses who would have been dead anyway but I was really shocked they died so young.
Thelma Todd. 29. A beautiful woman who was genuinely funny. I thought wow she's good, how rare is that? A mysterious death to this day.
Susan Peters. 31. A young actress who is so wonderful in Random Harvest. Accidentally shot during hunting and became a paraplegic. One of the first disabled people on stage that I know of as she played Laura in Glass Menagerie in a wheelchair and Elizabeth in the Barretts of Wimpole Street. Became depressed and starved herself to death.

An acquaintance made a documentary about Tom and his illness and death. It's called "Life and Death on the A List", if you can find it anywhere. It takes a rather unsparing view of the tumble from being one of the absolute studliest, most gorgeous gay men in NYC to his very sad end. It is difficult to watch. Tom was friends with a bartender I worked with and would stop by to hang out and visit his buddy while he worked. I was only twenty-one and was mesmerized.
