Like many of you, I also have my side pursuits and hobbies that enrich my personal and professional life. Currently, I'm enjoying one of the more delightful ones: fostering a puppy on behalf of Oregon Dog Rescue. This service I perform is because my employer allows #remotework. If you enjoy animals and care about their well-being, I encourage you to consider taking on this kind of effort yourself. It's especially well suited to people who work from home, and you can fill a critical need to lighten the load on animal rescues, as well as help socialize furry friends for maximum success when adopted.P.S. Quesadilla says "happy Friday!"##rescuedismyfavoritebreed #rescuedogsoflinkedin #officemates

I am not qualified for this role. I am not interested in this role. But I would like to be good friends with anyone who works at Hershey (also, Godiva, Ben & Jerry's, Full Sail Brewing, or Trader Joe's). Working in the financial sector is very interesting, but it's not very delicious. #FeedMeSeymour (Job posting via Donna Wilson)

I did it. Okay, that dramatic beginning makes it sound like it's much more of an accomplishment than it really was but this weekend I visited Alaska, the 49th state of the union but the 50th state I've visited. In many ways, this was an arbitrary goal. I am a project/program manager by trade so I set goals, map out the path, and achieve them. Visiting every state in my nation of birth seemed like such an obvious objective, how could I not?Beyond checking things off the list, there's a lot to be learned by thoroughly traveling your own country -- things I believe a lot of people forget.- π»πππ ππ π πππππ πππππππ. The United States is the 4th largest country in the world, preceded only by Russia, Canada, and India, and a greater percentage of our land is actually livable by humans. - π»πππ ππ π πππππ πππππππ. Arizona, the state of my birth, became the 48th state only 112 years ago. Then it wasn't until 1959, a mere 65 years ago, that Alaska and Hawaii became states, bringing our nation to its current phase of completion. Many of my colleagues and family members were born into a nation with only 48 stars on the flag. - π»πππ ππ π π ππππππ πππππππ.Visiting each state has made me feel greater sympathy for our nation's leaders due to our immense diversity. It's beyond regional chain restaurants and coffee shops, highway billboards, and terrain. It's also in how people think, act, and do. Truth be told, I think a California conservative has more in common with an Mississippi liberal. In fact, the Venn diagram is so varied in its overlap that it should make anyone question what "conservative" and "liberal" mean. So what can I say after visiting 50 states? I hope everyone gets to do it and, if you do, that you get outside of the major cities. Cities are variations of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. The real heart of a state and its people are outside of the cities and capitols. #Visit50States #SetBigGoals #Travel #diversity #Alaska #Anchorage

Today I got a call from a local county district attorney's office."We're giving you a courtesy call that you should expect a subpoena soon to appear in court at a trial for someone who is accused of stealing your identity."Whaaa!?! I've been enrolled in monitoring services and my credit is frozen. No credit or debit card is missing. I check my credit card and bank statements monthly, and everything is as it should be (except I'm not fabulously wealthy...yet). I'm better protected than a lot of people so how could this happen?I considered multiple possibilities:- Was this someone who had been in my home?- Did someone scrape my CV and contact information from my LinkedIn profile?- Was my mailbox broken into? Did someone go through my recycling? It turned out that it was much more pedestrian: several months ago, I stopped at a brew pub, and an employee had taken a picture of the front and back of my credit card, as well as my receipt signature and a picture of me. She hadn't used the information, but the content was found on her phone after she was arrested for someone's information she had used. Aside from the violation of trust, I was ultimately unaffected by her actions.Yet, this is a good reminder to be vigilant. No one is more invested in protecting you than you. Here are some tips:- Assume your information is everywhere and someone with bad intent has it. - Unless you want to be "credit active," freeze your credit with each credit bureau. It's easily reversed (generally with an online click). - Consider enrolling in a credit monitoring service. (I've been enrolled for several years for free thanks to all the data breaches at Target, Home Depot, and other retailers.)- Report ID theft promptly. The best resource for this is https://lnkd.in/g3dUx5qz and it's a great all-purpose resource. Finally, if you are responsible for an older person or a child (particularly someone on the cusp of turning 18), help them out by monitoring their credit too. The elderly and the newly "credit active" are particularly vulnerable to identity theft. #idtheft #identitytheft #consumerfinance #informationsecurity

If there is one thing that my years on social media, including LinkedIn, have taught me it is that people love pictures of food, sunsets, babies, and pets.Let the weak shield their eyes and the strong tremble. I present you with the ultimate social media posting: A sunset...WITH a pet...WITH food...WITH a baby.I expect to go viral. You can say you knew me when. #humor #socialmedia #IDidItAllForTheGram

Start-up vs. corporate job:This crossed my Instagram feed and I had to chuckle and share because of the truthfulness.First day at Intel: An all-day class where "TLAs" and badge color were explained in detail.First day at a start-up: "Here's a list of all the applications we use or are considering. Learn how to use these ASAP."Don't get me wrong! When you're joining a large corporation with a firmly established culture, those new employee onboarding classes are extremely valuable. But more often than not in my career, I've been expected to forage for information myself and figure it out in the moment. I'll tell you one thing, though. Startup life teaches you a lot, but there's no leftover catered pastries that magically show up in the kitchen. I do miss that. #startup #fintech #adaptability

I have also done this and continue to do it whether I'm looking for a role or not. It's not only helpful to your colleagues and the recruiter, but it's a great way to nurture your network and be a connector. #jobseekers #connecting

A short story for my job seeking friends. Until recently, I've lived nearby my older brother for nearly all of my adult life. This was mutually advantageous:- He had someone who would sell his things for him on Craigslist and Marketplace.- I had someone who gave me lots of things to do.Wait a minute! Maybe only one of us benefitted! Okay, moving on. Every time I'd list something, my brother would text multiple times. "Has it sold yet? How many people are interested? Why don't more people want this?" He expected a rush of interest, a swarm of communication. "Don't worry," I'd soothe him. "You only have one totally unused Nordictrac to sell. We only need one buyer."And this is my humble story to people seeking jobs and are intimidated or dejected by the process. I've read so many posts by those who have applied dozens, if not hundreds, of times and are despirited at the rejections or, worse, the vacuum of silence. You only need one job offer. It will happen. Keep the faith. (And no, I'm not available to sell your stuff online.)#jobseekers #positivity
