Yesssss, vanaf nu mag ik me gedragsveranderaar noemen. Mijn studie aan de Behavior Change Academy was een mooie verdieping als change manager.Het menselijke gedrag is een onuitputtelijke bron van verwondering en inspiratie.Veel geleerd, onder andere:·Gedragsverandering begint met concreet maken ·Onze hersenen zijn bijzonder lui, dus houd het simpel·Heel veel inkijkjes in psychologische basisprocessen zoals: need to belong, self-efficacy en groepscohesie ·Weerstand is er (bijna) altijd. Bronnen zijn verlies van autonomie, onzekerheid, verlies van energie·Het rijtje: kennis, houding en gedrag is achterhaaldEn zo kan ik nog wel even doorgaan.Ik geniet van leren, zonder persoonlijke groei geen organisatie groei. Het is nog steeds mijn motto.Dank Timo Jansen en Prof. dr. Rick van Baaren. Jullie hebben aantoonbare diepe kennis van gedragsverandering en weten dit op inspirerende manier over te brengen. Last week I did something that I thought I was never capable of: I climbed the Mont Ventoux, a famous mountain cycle climb in France.The preparation for this ride was not perfect. Due to busy times, I could not always live up to my training schedule. I even considered not to climb the mountain.So, what started last week as a ‘let’s see how far I come’ effort ended at the top. I cried because I conquered that little voice inside me that said: you are not good enough for this. What I have learned from this is that you are always more capable than you give yourself credits for. What helped was that I had support riding next to me. So that was my secure base. So, my second lesson was that to succeed I need a secure base. That’s also what leadership is about, right? Providing a secure base so that employees push their boundaries and perform at their best. I take these lessons home with me, as a leader and as an employee.

Wow, all the things you must do as a leader. You must be visionary, empathic, create a safe working environment, translate vision into concrete goals and not unimportant deliver results.A great job and hopefully a lot of fun but also sometimes challenging. Someone once said to me: a leader exists by the grace of followers otherwise you’re just taking a walk in the park.So, of all the things you must do, isn’t creating a great team the most essential? It is my belief that the leaders who put their people first (do the walking, not just the talking) will flourish in the future. So maybe of all the things you must do, make sure you are a magnet for talent. Be the leader everyone wants to work for. How? I asked one of what I think is our greatest talent within the bank. She answered:"By continuously challenging and supporting me to step out of my comfort zone and take the next step, even when I am not sure I am up for the task yet. Being allowed to learn from mistakes, back-up when needed and a dose of honest feedback are key to make this work!"So, stretching, honesty and always be a safe haven are the main ingredients. When I was a little girl and all my friends were away and I was done playing my favourite games, I sometimes could feel bored. Then I used to go to my mother and asked: I am bored, what can I do? I remember vividly that she always answered: good for you, be open to what can happen. Back then I thought this was a strange answer. Now, I know she taught me a very valuable lesson.How can you be a visionary leader if you don’t take any time to hear your own voice and let the ideas come to you? How can you be an inspirational leader if you are too tired? Every top sporter will confirm, if you train hard, you must also rest to get results. Last weekend all my appointments were cancelled due to illness of friends. For a second, I felt like that little girl again feeling bored. I let it be. Still a bit of an awkward feeling but curiously open to my thoughts. I think it’s time for a new paradigm in leadership. Just like in (top) sport: Work hard, play hard and rest hard! #leadership #changeleadership #newleadership

When I worked for the CEO at a previous company, he taught me a valuable leadership lesson: surround yourself with people who dare to be critical to you.In every bilateral conversation with him, he asked: How can I do better? After a while it was so natural for me to give him feedback. I felt no hesitation.Yesterday we had a retrospective with the team, and I ask the question if they had any feedback for me. In the slipstream of busyness, I noticed I hadn't asked this question in a while. So, I must do better.Don’t assume automatically that your employees will provide you with feedback naturally. You must keep on asking. And yes, it’s you as a leader that must do the work in this. Until it becomes a habit and people naturally open up to you.#leadership #people #team

If we want to change our leadership behavior we often think about the big stuff: programs, journeys, tracks.I think it is also about the small stuff. We can create new habits every day, if we want to. The beautiful thing is that you have full autonomy to do so. Check out the third suggestion in the post below.Plan more time with your employees and talk about how they are doing. You will be amazed how the relationship improves and the effect on day-to-day work. Remember, we don’t stop being human beings when we enter the (virtual) office space.#leadership #change #work

What is the essence of leadership? I thought a lot about that question this week. Is it about getting the job done and creating results? Is it about impacting the world? Is it about getting teams engaged? Probably a mix of all the above.But if we peel off all the layers what remains is that it's about people. Do we have the courage to see people in their essence of being. So, I thought of this quote of Maya Angelou:“People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”For me this is the essence.
